In 2022, Ben King, an 18-year-old living in Gig Harbor, Washington, had just graduated from high school. He was weeks away from attending Edmonds Community College on scholarship to play baseball and earn his degree. One day, he was having a horrible headache after a summer ball game, so bad that he was taken to the local emergency room. While we initially thought he may have been dehydrated, doctors decided to give him an MRI to rule out anything major. The MRI results came in and revealed that he had a large mass in the middle of his brain.

Ben was immediately transported to Harborview Hospital in Seattle via ambulance to meet with the neurology team and go through the following steps. Our whole family was obviously in shock over such a life-changing medical incident, and we all dropped everything to be with Ben in Seattle. After stabilizing Ben and ensuring his comfort, we consulted with doctors and developed a plan of action. The neurology team concluded that the tumor needed to be removed or else it could be deadly for Ben. The cancer had been growing for many years and had finally reached the point where it was noticeable because it was pressing on the brain, causing the headache. They then let us go home for three days to prepare for a risky removal surgery, which would happen at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Over the next few days, we had many visitors and prayer sessions, anxious about the surgery to come.
